Teaching and learning in the scriptures, are considerably more than academic. It involves being directed by God's principles in relationship to others, along with knowing and responding to God. It calls for the learner to place the Word of God into practice, not just hear it (Jas. 1:22). It requires hearing a word from your exterior and setting it upon the interior, in order that it can be expressed in our every action. 2:1-7).
All things needs to be done unto edifying. Then it shouldn't be done if what is being done teaches those present cannot. Just as using the gift of tongues (that was talked in the church to benefit everyone) so it's with prophecy. Those that listen will learn and be comforted. The result of prophecy is always to comfort, encourage, edify, reinforce, exhort, excite and help. These should be the guidelines for prophecy inside the New Testament church. We, in ministry, are given the sole responsibility as believers to build up others. This occurs in a variety of manners as we seek the accurate welfare of others, encourage harmony and peace, and walk in love. We should unto the edifying of the church, and speak things which can be nice and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others. Message From Chris Oyakhilome, Jesus Wants an Holy Thanksgiving Dinner He had just gotten back in the food pantry. A frozen turkey, explained that he simply liked to eat the dark meat was held up by him, and he wondered if we might like the other parts? I said we'd, and he thrust against the entire fowl into my arms. "Fantastic," he said, " why don't you cook it and simply give me the legs and wings?" I concurred, and I invited him to eat dinner with us the next night. He said yes, took several moments to think over it, and then returned to his flat. During the time, we were having difficulty connecting with our neighbors, most of whom were folks combating addiction issues generational poverty, and systemic injustices. This particular neighbor was not chilly but removed. We strove to be friendly and brilliant -inviting him over giving plates of biscuits to him -but the interactions were compelled and our neighbor kept his space. Before the morning he showed up with a turkey. I understood I needed to do it all up: mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, possibly even pie. On the day of our religious holiday, the air filled, and our neighbor showed up right at dinnertime. We ate and laughed and chatted about matters both small (teasing my daughter) and big (our respective religious beliefs). Our flat was in its normal state of disrepair, there were no ornamentation, and there were just several side dishes to go around. And the end result was perfect: dialogue, good food, plus to be able to widen a chance to make room for more folks within our table, our friendship. I was surprised by the interpersonal boons of the meal because of how I understood outreach to the poor-as a form of charity, not hospitality. I grew up because it was a chance to do some good on the planet, adoring Thanksgiving. I loved going to my church the second or third week in November and helping put together big cardboard boxes stuffed with Stove Top stuffing, carrots, onions, potatoes, cans of cranberry sauce, packets of gravy, store bought pumpkin pie, and, yes, a frozen turkey. I loved delivering those food cartons all around town, knocking on doors, taking the cartons inside, craning for a glimpse of lives at the edges of my world-folks who were in need. I'd deliver the cartons and return home, burning inwardly at a superb deed done. But there remained in me a nagging sense which I wanted to do more, that a once-a-year peek into these different lives was just not enough. Each time I dropped off a Thanksgiving carton, the interaction was awkward. The people were strangers to me, only names from a list at church. I expected them to be grateful, and I expected to receive some thanks for my role in helping. The exchange was impersonal, hierarchical, and infused together with the standard parts of charity- the inferior receiver and also the giver that is great. Although they appeared innocuous, these vacation interactions generated an analyze expectation for how I interacted with others across class or ethnic lines. I would continually be the gracious host, the helper, the one extending my table - than me would continually be the ones in need, and individuals who were different. My neighbor and many more like my conception of generosity and me have changed. Another neighbor, a Somali Bantu buddy, used to take any fresh produce she received in her own Thanksgiving food boxes out and give me the rest. At my daughter's school, a fellow parent makes photocopies of the place and time of a once-a-month food pantry and urges us all to stock up on essentials in order to greatly help with invoices. The common thread in these interactions is twofold: One, individuals from lower-income communities are several of the very generous folks I have ever met, and two, it takes being in real relationship with people to be able to both experience and practice.
